On the first day of the Spring holiday programme at Wilton Park we had an enthusiastic group of tamariki who were set on cleaning up the bush. They started the impromptu Park clean so they could safety access all areas of the park.
These tamariki worked for most of the day to remove rubbish from the bush area of our new home. They found it unbelievable that people would be so careless as to throw so such rubbish in such a beautiful space.
They were excited by how many ‘treasures’ we found, including :
an old TV
a ring
a $10 note (what shall we buy?)
a cassette tape
3 cooking pots
4 coffee mugs (one of which was handmade and intact & may have went home with an adult who won’t be named)
a VHS recorder
two pairs of sunglasses
…. and sooooo much more
All the rubbish was sorted and bagged up. Ranger Adam from the Wellington City Council came and collected it but he needed to make two trips as there was too much for one load.
The tamariki did a fantastic job, and I can only hope more adults would follow their example by picking up rubbish and caring for our beautiful environment. Ka pai, tamariki!
